Frequently asked questions
Travel insurance can be arranged in person at a VÚB branch or online on the VÚB bank website, as well as via the VÚB Mobile Banking app, or by phone through the VÚB Digital Branch.
Travel insurance is intended for tourist trips in Europe, in Slovakia (search and rescue insurance), or worldwide. The medical expenses insurance automatically includes all common summer and winter holiday sports performed on a recreational basis. Travel insurance also includes manual work; business trips as well as travel for work purposes are covered (i.e. the client is insured even if they have an employment contract with a local company abroad).
- Short-term travel insurance – insurance for a fixed period, for a maximum of 365 days of continuous stay (366 days in a leap year).
- Travel insurance for an indefinite period – with a policy period of 1 year. It applies to the first 90 days of each stay abroad during the policy period. The number of trips abroad is not limited.
In travel insurance within Slovakia, this refers to search and rescue insurance, exclusively within the territory of the Slovak Republic. Search and rescue insurance covers insured events that occur in mountain areas in Slovakia, including chasms and caves, in accordance with the Mountain Rescue Service Act. The Mountain Rescue Service Act defines 15 mountain areas where the mountain rescue service operates. These are the Belianske Tatras, Bukovské vrchy, Javorníky, Kremnické vrchy, Kysucká vrchovina, Kysucké Beskydy, Malá Fatra, Moravian-Silesian Beskydy, Low Tatras, Pieniny, Slovak Paradise, Central Beskydy, Veľká Fatra, High Tatras, and Western Tatras.
In travel insurance abroad, search and rescue insurance is included under medical expenses abroad within Europe or worldwide (according to the selected territorial coverage).
In credit card travel insurance, search and rescue insurance is part of both types of insurance – Standard and Exclusive – and covers insured events within the Slovak Republic; at the same time, it is also valid for events anywhere abroad up to an altitude of 5,000 m above sea level.
- The age limit for individual travel insurance is 75 years. If the client reaches the age of 75 during the insurance period, the insurance automatically terminates on the next policy anniversary following their 75th birthday.
- The age limit for travel insurance linked to credit cards is 80 years. The insurance terminates at the end of the insurance period in which the insured person reaches the age of 80.
- For search and rescue insurance in Slovakia, no age limit is set. However, it is not necessary to arrange this insurance for persons under 18 years of age who have health insurance coverage in Slovakia and permanent residence in Slovakia. Minor foreign nationals do not have search and rescue insurance covered by their health insurance, i.e. they must arrange insurance.
Travel insurance abroad is valid in Europe or worldwide, depending on the territorial coverage you have arranged in the insurance contract.
Search and rescue insurance in the Slovak Republic is valid exclusively within the territory of the Slovak Republic.

In the event of an insured event, it is necessary to inform the insurer in writing without delay about the occurrence of the insured event and, after returning, to submit original documents confirming the payment of costs that are subject to insurance compensation by the insurer, together with the completed “notification of an insured event” form in accordance with the relevant general insurance terms and conditions.
The insured event can be reported to the insurer in several ways:
- online via a web form on the website www.generali.sk;
- via the San Marco Portal client portal;
- in writing, by sending the notification to the insurer’s registered office address.
Yes. The client will be reimbursed for stolen or damaged items up to the insured amount. The insured event must not occur due to the insured’s negligence, i.e.: as a result of a natural disaster, a technical fault in the water supply system, a traffic accident, injury to the insured, during transport if the items were handed over to the carrier, when deposited in storage, or in the case of robbery if reported to the police. Robbery is defined as a situation where the offender used violence against the insured, threatened violence, or exploited the insured's sudden physical or mental distress. The use of narcotic/paralyzing or similar substances must be proven and documented. It is important that luggage is not left unattended without supervision or without using available safety features/devices.
Luggage insurance also covers delayed delivery of luggage. If luggage is delayed during transport to the destination, the client is entitled to reimbursement of costs for purchasing replacement clothing and hygiene items up to 80 € for each commenced hour, provided that the delay is at least 6 hours. A delay of less than 6 hours is not considered for insurance compensation.
In the event of delayed luggage, you must report this to the claims department abroad, which is part of every airport, and request confirmation, the so-called PIR document (Property Irregularity Report). The client is also required to request confirmation if they discover that their luggage is damaged or items have been stolen from it. After returning to Slovakia, report the insured event to the insurance company without delay, including submitting the necessary documents.
If you need medical care abroad, it is necessary to immediately contact the Assistance Service at the phone number +421 2 58572266, where trained operators and professional doctors are available to you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They will also help you find a medical facility, arrange an appointment with doctors, and organize your admission to a hospital.
In the event of hospitalization or costs exceeding 300 €, it is necessary to immediately contact the Assistance Service by phone, available 24 hours a day, at +421 2 58572266, either by the client or a third party. If the insured does not follow the instructions of the insurer’s foreign representative and its contractual partners, the insurer has the right to reduce or refuse insurance compensation. If the hospital stay is expected to last longer than 3 days, the insurer or the assistance company must be informed as soon as possible; otherwise, insurance coverage may be lost or the insurance compensation may be reduced. If the client covers costs up to 300 € themselves, it is necessary to send:
- a completed “notification of an insured event – medical expenses” form;
- original medical reports stating the diagnosis and a list of medical procedures performed;
- original receipts for treatment, hospital stay, medicines prescribed by a doctor, and transport;
- travel tickets;
- proof of payment for accommodation;
- in the event of death, the authorized person shall submit a death certificate and a document/report of the examination of the deceased.
In the event of a delay of the public transport used, you should have this fact confirmed by the airline or the relevant carrier.
