New obligation to enable cashless payments from 1 May 2026
The new Act on the Registration of Sales, effective from 1 May 2026, imposes on entrepreneurs the obligation to allow customers to make a cashless payment for goods or services for amounts exceeding 1 EUR.
Today, customers naturally expect fast, convenient and secure payments – whether by card, mobile phone, smart watch or another means. Cashless payments can be enabled for customers in several ways – for example by payment card via a payment terminal, by a bank transfer order, or by generating a QR code. The choice of a specific solution is entirely up to the entrepreneur and depends on the needs of their business.
Cashless payments also bring benefits for entrepreneurs themselves:
- they speed up customer service,
- they increase sales – not all customers carry cash,
- they reduce work and costs associated with cash handling,
- they contribute to higher security at the place of business.
If you are an entrepreneur and have not yet selected a suitable solution, we will help you navigate the available options so you can choose the one that best meets your needs and your customers’ expectations.
Fulfil your legal obligation in time and at the same time use this change as an opportunity to take your business to the next level.
If you already allow your customers to pay cashless, you are fulfilling the legal obligation. If your customers currently pay cash only, VÚB offers you several solutions.
Payment terminal
A payment terminal from VÚB allows you to accept payments by card, mobile phone, smart watch or another means quickly, securely and without the need for cash. It is a practical solution for entrepreneurs, especially those with a permanent place of business.
This solution is particularly suitable for entrepreneurs who:
- have a stable place of business,
- process a higher number of payments,
- want to eliminate the limitations associated with cash handling,
- appreciate speed and transparency in revenues.
Soon, we will introduce the option to accept QR payments directly on the payment terminal. This will provide a comprehensive solution that combines card payments and QR payments in one device.
Payment terminal on a mobile device
A payment terminal on a mobile phone or tablet allows you to accept cashless payments anywhere – quickly, securely and without the need for additional hardware. All you need is an Android mobile device with NFC technology, and you can immediately accept payments by tapping a card, mobile phone, smart watch or another means.
The mobile phone or tablet thus functions as a fully-fledged payment terminal, making it an ideal solution for entrepreneurs who need flexibility and mobility when selling goods or services.
This solution is particularly suitable for:
- entrepreneurs who require flexibility and mobility in sales,
- start-up entrepreneurs and small sole traders,
- clients with a lower or occasional number of payments.
Notification service for received QR payments – State solution
In order for the bank to be able to send notifications of received QR payments to the Financial Administration of the Slovak Republic, the account holder must notify the bank of the notification account electronically via Internet Banking available for entrepreneurs.
What is a notification account
A notification account is your standard business current account on which you have activated the service of sending notifications about received QR payments to the Financial Administration of the Slovak Republic.
How the solution works:
- your eKasa generates a QR code for the payment,
- the customer scans the QR code in their banking application and confirms the payment,
- once the payment is credited to your notification account, a notification is automatically sent to the Financial Administration of the Slovak Republic, after which the eKasa confirms the successful payment and generates a receipt.
The payment is processed as an account-to-account transfer and is credited to your notification account almost immediately.
Conditions of use:
- your eKasa must support QR code generation,
- technical implementation on the cash register system side is required,
- you must notify the bank of the notification account on which you want to activate the service of sending notifications about received QR payments.
When the solution is suitable:
- for entrepreneurs with a low to medium number of payments,
- for those looking for a simple solution alongside cash payments.
This solution is not mandatory – if you already accept card payments via a payment terminal or via a payment terminal on a mobile device/tablet, you are already fulfilling the legal obligation.
