Gold in general

Gold is a precious metal, chemically resistant and a very good conductor of heat and electricity. It is soluble only in aqua regia and cyanide solutions. Gold is a chemical element with the symbol Au (aurum). Gold is heavier than most metals due to its high density. This property is exploited when panning for gold, since it will fall to the bottom, separating itself from other elements.

Measuring gold

Gold is valued by two basic parameters: weight and purity.

The weight of goldis indicated either in grams or troy ounces (1 t oz = 31.1034768 grams), named after the French town of Troyes.

There are two ways to determine gold's purity: either in thousandths, where an alloy with a purity of 999/1000 is 999 parts pure of gold to one part of impurities, or in karats, with 24 karat gold is pure.

Determining the price of gold

The London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) sets the price of gold twice a day (at 10:30AM and 3:00PM London time) in US dollars, euros and pounds sterling per troy ounce for a minimum trade volume of 1,000 troy ounces. These fixings constitute the reference price for gold.
