History of VÚB Bank

Všeobecná úverová banka (VÚB, General Credit Bank) was established on 1 January 1990, by separating commercial activities for corporate clients in the Slovak Republic from the State Bank of Czechoslovakia as a state monetary institution. In 1992, it was transformed into a joint stock company belonging to the National Property Fund of the Slovak Republic.

However, the real breakthrough for the Bank’s operations came with the privatization process, when, at the end of 2001, the Italian banking group IntesaBci (currently Intesa Sanpaolo) acquired a majority stake in VÚB.

During its history, VÚB Bank has won many prestigious awards from world economic magazines such as Global Finance, The Banker, and Euromoney. For several years, it has been the most valued bank in Slovakia in the Golden Coin financial products competition.
