VUB is a part of Intesa Sanpaolo group

Bratislava 2.2.2007 – Banca Intesa, the majority shareholder of VUB officially merged with Italian banking group Sanpaolo IMI on January 1, 2007. The merger gave rise to Intesa Sanpaolo, the largest bank in Italy and sixth largest bank in Europe.

The biggest European banking merger in 2006 was announced in August last year. In four months the deal was approved by all relevant institutions to start 2007 under a new joint name Intesa Sanpaolo. The merger will mean higher stability to VUB, better access to foreign markets and possibility to obtain resources under more favourable terms within the Group.

Intesa Sanpaolo is the clear market leader in Italy. Its deposit and loan market share exceeds 20% doubling thus the share of its local market runner-up. In Italy, Intesa Sanpaolo has about 12 mil. clients served by a network of approximately 5,500 branches.

With its market capitalization at EUR 74 bil. Intesa Sanpaolo ranks the sixth largest bank in Europe and the third bank in euro zone. It has a strong position mainly in Central and Eastern Europe. The Group has its subsidiaries spread across 13 countries operating approximately 1,650 branches and serving 7.7 mil. clients there. In addition, Intesa Sanpaolo runs an international network to support its corporate clients covering a total of 35 countries including USA, Russia, China and India.

Following the merger Compagnia di San Paolo holding a 7.68% stake has become Intesa Sanpaolo´s major shareholder. Other shareholders include Credit Agricole S.A. (5.49%), Gruppo Generali (5.07%), Fondazione Cariplo (4.68%), Fondazione C.R. Padova e Rovigo (4.18%), Fondazione C.R. in Bologna (2.73%), Giovanni Agnelli e C. S.a.p.A. (2.45%), Carlo Tassara S.p.A. (2.25%) and Fondazione Cariparma (2.20%).
